Antwerp visit

Cathedral of Our Lady, Antwerp.

In mid September we worked in Antwerp's archives with the ERC project team on New Christian Materiality, 1450-1750 (Francisco Bethencourt, Ana Paula Lloyd, Ines Guarda, Milan Francis). Christine Göttler, who created an excellent website on Emanuel Ximenes and has worked for many years on the city's art history and material culture, was there to support us. We visited museums and churches together, discussing references to New Christians in paintings by Antwerp's leading artists. We scrutinised their locations in the city and burial sites. It was our first visit to the Felixarchief and the Rijksarchief, but we already made good findings in dozens of codices consulted.

We were impressed by the storage rooms where the Maagdenhuis Museum collection was temporarily placed. Dirk Kirt kindly guided us there.

The cathedral is a major place for our research, as are St. Jacob's Church and the Jesuits’ Church (Sint Carolus Borromeus). The Royal Fine Arts Museum, Snijders and Rockoxhuis, and Diva have paintings and objects relevant to our research
